Taxes on tobacco products will most certainly continue to rise. New Jersey, Vermont, Connecticut and Florida are only some of the states leaning harder on smokers for revenue. With the Federal and state Taxes on tobacco products now, the price has skyrocketed to as much as 7 dollars a pack in some states. The time is now to do something about it.
Lawmakers' reasoning: There is evidence that price increases cause smokers to reduce consumption. And the medical costs of smoking are astronomical—a huge burden to the states. In an Article from a Florida Newspaper, it mentions that the costs for tobacco-related Medicaid care for the state is $1.25 billion annually while existing tobacco tax revenue is around $430 million. That’s just for the State of Florida - imagine what that number is nationwide.
